Window Position Profiles allow you to save your current window layout and easily restore it at a later time, (e.g. after reboots, or undocking/redocking). This guide will walk you through multiple methods for saving and loading Window Position Profiles.
To save a Window Position Profile, begin by arranging application windows across your screens. Size and position them how you like, then perform one of the following methods:
Right-click the DisplayFusion tray icon, navigate to "Window Position Profiles," and select "Save Profile," then "New Profile."
Save New Profile
Name your profile and click "OK."
Profile Name
Right-click the DisplayFusion tray icon and select "Settings."
Settings
Click the "Window Position Profiles" tab and click "New Profile."
Window Position Profile Tab
Name your profile and click "OK." (Other options include setting a HotKey, ignoring minimized windows when restoring the profile, and adding/editing/deleting entries in the list of windows.)
New Profile
Use the same initial navigation paths to save over or edit existing profiles. Note that overwriting does not add programs to the profile, it completely replaces it with only the windows you have open at the time.
  1. Right-click the DisplayFusion tray icon, navigate to "Window Position Profiles," and select "Load Profile," then select a saved profile.
  2. Open the DisplayFusion "Settings," select the "Window Position Profiles" tab, select the desired profile from the list, and click the "Load" button.
  3. Set a HotKey and/or add a TitleBar Button for the profile and load using either method (See Functions for more detail).
  4. Set a HotKey via the "Window Position Profiles" tab by editing the profile and assigning the key combination, the load using that HotKey.
  5. Load From Tray Icon
    1. Load From Tray Icon
    Load from WPP Tab
    2. Load From WPP Tab
    Load from Function
    3. Load From Function
    Load from HotKey
    4. Load From HotKey
  6. Load via the command line with
    DisplayFusionCommand.exe -WindowPositionProfileLoad "profile name"
(See Command Line Tool for more detail).
  1. Assign a Window Position Profile to a Monitor Profile via the "Manage Monitor Profiles" button in the "Monitor Configuration" window by selecting/creating the Monitor Profile from the list, selecting the Window Position Profile from the dropdown, and clicking "Close," then "OK."
The profiles will then be linked; each time the selected Monitor Profile is loaded, its Window Position Profile will be loaded as well. Note there is a delay of 15-20 seconds after a Monitor Profile loads before the window positions are loaded.
  2. Monitor Configuration
    Manage Monitor Profiles
    Window Position Profile Selection
  3. Create a Trigger to load a Window Position Profile when a specific Event is carried out. (See Triggers for more detail).
    Trigger
  1. Right-click the DisplayFusion tray icon, choose Settings.
  2. Click the Window Position Profiles tab.
  3. Select the profile to edit and click the Edit button.
  4. In the "Edit Window Position Profile" window, you can click Add to add a new entry, or select an existing entry and click Edit or Delete.
  • If a window has a window title that changes often (e.g. a web browser where the title is the page you're currently on), you can edit the "Window Text" condition for that entry and remove all except the name of the program. Using Google Chrome as an example, you'd remove all but "Google Chrome" from the Window Text condition.
  • If two entries have identical "Process Filename," "Window Class," and "Window Text" conditions, both entries will match any window with those values. There isn't anyway around this, as those are the only conditions that can be used to identify an open window.
  • Window Position Profiles don't launch the applications, they only move windows that are already open before the profile was loaded. If you'd like to launch and position applications on startup, please see the Launching and Positioning an Application on Startup guide.

The window position profiles are great (actually the only reason I am evaluating DisplayFusion Pro) :)

Is there a way to set which application has focus when you switch to a profile? It's a small thing, but it would be useful, especially since I like to switch frequently using a hotkey.

Another couple of things:
1. Could you add an option to minimize every window that is not specified in the profile? Or maybe to specify order so that the specified windows can be on top. Currently, if I have a random window open, it ends up on top of some / all of the specified windows.
2. It would be good if the switching were faster. Currently the windows seem to get moved around even if they are to be minimized / maximized, and it takes a few seconds for all windows to be re-arranged. I would like it to be as quick as possible.

Thanks for your good work!

I've added your first two requests to our feature request list. Unfortunately it's about as fast as it's going to get. DisplayFusion has to restore minimized windows to check their position and move them if necessary, then re-minimize them. It's not ideal, but it's the most compatible with all scenarios :)

This doesn't seem to work very well for me:
1) Moves windows that are not part of the profile.
2) Does not bring windows to the front.
3) Speed (you don't need to check a minimized windows position if its not one that should be moved....)

I suspect DisplayFusion is overmatching windows for some reason :/

@Jolly: I'd be glad to help out if you could send a Support Request through Help > Support Request in the DisplayFusion Settings window. If you could include a backup of your settings as well, that would be great!

Is there a way to restore window positions to multiple virtual desktops in Windows 10? When using the standard window position profile feature, the windows will move to the correct monitor, but they won't restore to the virtual desktop that they were on previously.

If this feature doesn't exist, are there any plans to implement in the future? I've been trying to find a way to replicate the experience of the Mac where you can restore everything to its current position on reboot and your entire environment automatically comes up the way it was before the restart. With a combination of startup manipulation, firefox windows picking up where they left off, and DisplayFusion, I've nearly got it.

Thanks for any info!

@pengland: Not at the moment, but it's on our to-do list. We'll be sure to let you know if/when we're able to add it :)

Thanks!

Hi,

Is there anyway to append new windows position to an existing profile? I'm looking for a way that will allow me to add new applications positions without having to erase old applications which are not in used when I save a new profile.

Also, is there a way to store windows positions only by the application name, without the window class or window text? This is quite useful when you want to save the location of new email window (which always has different window text), Spotify player, etc.

TIA

@Ziv45026: There sure is! If you open the main Settings window, and go to the Window Position Profiles tab, you can edit them there. When you double-click a profile to edit, you'll be able to remove/edit certain conditions, and there's also an Add button that allows you to add an entry for a new window :)

Hope that helps!

Keith, thanks for the assistance!
Thing is that by default, windows are saved with all 3 checkboxes selected and I'm not sure that is the condition to restore them, wethear its by the class, filename or window text. Is there an option to set that windows will be saved only by the process filename?

Also, if I'm trying to automate the process of saving the windows positions using a trigger, will it amend the new windows or override the profile only with the current active windows?

TIA,
Ziv

@Ziv45026: Automatically saving them would overwrite the whole profile. What interval are you wanting to save it on? If you're saving it frequently to keep the sizes of currently open windows, the "Save Window Positions" and "Restore Window Positions from Last Save" functions might be a better fit, as they use the window handles for each window: https://www.displayfusion.com/Discussions/View/automatically-save-and-restore-window-positions-on-sleepresume/?ID=fa98975e-e4ed-45de-afe0-fafad56c7a83#first

Hi Keith,

Thanks for your response. Here are my thoughts on the subject.
Let's say I've 40 apps on my laptop. If I configure a trigger to automate saving the profile, but it always overrides the profile with the apps that are currently opened, then previous apps that were saved are deleted and as such I'll never be able to create a complete profile of every app I've that will properly align it between my screens and its position.
I guess the same behavior is appliable for the rest of the profiles, icons, etc.
To conclude, I guess I'm looking for a feature that will append new windows into selected profile, rather than overwriting it.

Regards,
Z

Can you add an option to add windows you have open to an existing profile instead of having to spend time filling out to specific details. Maybe also a way to merge profiles too. Finally, an option to open the program/window if it is not already open before aligning the windows. That along with the already suggested choose which wind to fucus afterwards would make this feature near-perfect for all conceivable used to my mind. Maybe a function to add the focused window to a profile?

You can add a window to an existing Window Position Profile like so:

  • Open the DisplayFusion Settings
  • Click the Window Position Profiles tab
  • Select the Window Position Profile you want to edit and click the Edit button
  • Click the Add button
  • Use the blue target at the bottom of the Add window to select the window you want to add to the profile
  • Click OK, then OK again, then finally click Apply or OK in the main Settings window

The other two items are on our feature request list so I have added your vote to them :)

Thanks!

The window position profile does not actually load programs for me. So I set the profile for my 6-screen monitor setup. If I close all the programs, including Chrome with multiple tabs set the way I want them, and then load the position profile, it does nothing. It seems to only work if I already have all the windows open and all the Chrome tabs already loaded. This defeats the entire purpose of the functionality. Most of these programs already load in the position I want them anyways, and the ones that don't are easy to move. I got DisplayFusion for this purpose alone so I could save time and switch between multiple program configurations in multiple positions and I could switch between them with a hotkey. Am I missing something here?

Is it true that the window position profile feature only works if the window is already open? Is there a way to have display fusion open program windows that aren't already open?

@StephenSimon: That's correct. There isn't currently a way to have the profiles launch the applications, as it wouldn't be able to launch them and re-open the specific documents, websites, etc.

For some reason, Microsoft has started including application version numbers in the filepath for the application EXE. This messes up Window Position Profiles because the filepath changes whenever the application updates (usually automatically). Can the Process Filename field use wildcard characters to be be unaffected by those app updates?
I've attached screenshots showing what I had set in DF, the current filepath, and the current version of the affected app. Thanks in advance!

You can use a wildcard, yep! I usually just wildcard the whole path, like this:
*Notepad.exe
