I must say that I am a bit sick of not having this awesome windows feature. It's been years since you guys promised that you'll fix it. But this hasn't happened. I need to use this. I bought my big 43 monitor because I was sure DisplayFusion will let me use it as 4 separate monitors.

Not having Virtual Desktops is a HUGE letdown. Honestly, I would've gone with a different solution if I knew you weren't going to fix this ever.

Please, guys, this is a must. Just work on it, please. Who's with me?

Which issue are you having with the virtual desktops?

I have my 43 inch monitor split in 5 parts. Each one is like a sperate monitor. However, when I try to create a virtual desktop with the windows native command, I can only see the applications from one of the splits, aka the primary one. The other open applications just don't appear there and they stay open by default on any new virtual desktop I open.

Only if I move the open application into this split, which is the primary one, they will appear into the virtual desktop menu.

If you set the Taskbar Mode on the DisplayFusion Settings > Taskbar tab to "Windows taskbar shows all, DisplayFusion shows relevant," does that make any difference?

Yes it does show them all in the virtual desktop menu. However they are all shown in every taskbar as well which kinda defeats the purpose of having multiple taksbars.

If you use "Windows taskbar shows all, DisplayFusion shows relevant" it should only show them all on the Windows taskbar, and relevant ones only on the DF taskbars. This is the best workaround for now because the bug is with removing buttons from the Windows taskbar. The only way that we know how to remove them from the Windows taskbar causes this issue, and so far we haven't been able to find another way. There must be an undocumented API somewhere for doing it but no luck finding it so far :(

I don't think DF supports the virtual desktop function of windows 10 or at least I cant get it to work. And I don't know any other virtual desktop software that will work with DF.

The issue is that I am trying to use my laptops screen as a dual screen laptop using virtual desktops (switching between with a button).

I would like to specify on which virtual desktop the applications open as default.
Have a virtual desktop indicator down in the corner just as linux distros have.
Move applications by using the Move Window to Next Monitor button that is located in the taskbar.
Any help is appreciated.

DisplayFusion functions don't yet support sending windows to different virtual desktops, but it's on our list to do. I've added your info to the open ticket :)

Thanks!

I am already using an autohotkey solution for moving the windows between virtual desktops and a program that switches between virtual desktops on a button click. But what about the rest of the things I posted? I cannot make any of those work. Is there a way to have a virtual desktop and let DF recognize it as a second monitor?

Not at the moment, no. DisplayFusion doesn't have any feature support for the Windows 10 virtual desktops yet.

Do you know any other virtual screen software that it works good with? I am willing to switch.

I know some of our customers use BetterDesktopTool. DisplayFusion doesn't have built-in functions for any third-party virtual desktop apps though.

I want to start using Win 10 Virtual Desktops more too.

Please fully support this feature, it's the #1 missing thing for DF

The way i see it, is that you have a virtual desktop profiles section, that can load monitor profiles, and those then load windows positions, so those last two need to be aware of the desktop profile. Same for scripted functions and triggers, with a full virtual desktop API and event system.

Actually, calling the main (for me ) DF feature 'monitor profiles' is kind of confusing.

It would make more sense imho to split this up in monitor profiles (actual physical screens) , and 'screen areas' or something like that. so then when moving a window, you move it to an area, instead of a 'monitor'.

I don't use a 2nd screen anymore for the time being, but have a big ultrawide now. The way is use DF is with monitor profiles that leave an area at the right undefined, then i size the taskbar to fill this undefined area.

So, virtual desktops should be able to work without having a taskbar on each screen area. I'm not sure how windows 10 handles the relation of virtual desktops and multiple screens. DF could support both having a virtual desktop profile per monitor ( screen... see ), or all screens per desktop, ie which one controls which one.

Another feature would be a better structured less crowded rigfht click taskbar menu, or being able to reorder and change it's contents. ( so i don't have to search for the switch monitor profile item all the time )

So it's a question of will Display Fusion evolve with how screen use is evolving? It's not just about 'Multiple Monitors Made Easy' anymore, but also 'Widescreen Monitors Made Easy'

Thinking about it further, the only thing needed for now is just having triggers for virtual desktop changing. Does Windows not create events that you can capture ?

I guess 'IVirtualDesktopManager' only works with an application's owned windows, or whatever the windows terminology is.

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/winsdk/2015/09/10/virtual-desktop-switching-in-windows-10/

As a workaround for now, we would always make corresponding virtual desktop and DF monitor profiles, and then when switching desktop, manually choose the appropriate profile. I've been doing that for a while, but easy to forget. Something that would help with this is rearanging the task bar menu as mentioned before. Or maybe it would be possible that DF gives a notification popup when desktop is changed.

I guess a taskbar process does not get these events though. Hmm, maybe a hacky way of supporting this basic 'switch monitor profile on desktop change' use case, is then to have a tiny or hidden DF window on each desktop ? then we can get that notification, or probably DF can then just update the profile.

@Frederick: To clarify, you're looking to have different desktop wallpapers, window position profiles, etc for each virtual desktop that you create in Windows?

The main thing i'm missing is changing monitor profile on switching desktops. Unless i missed something obvious i don't see it available in DF

Be that by introducing another level & section in DF, or just using a switch trigger and some naming conventions, i'd be ok with that...

Since Windows probably does not remember window positions with virtual desktops and DF changing positions around, i guess window position support would be required too.

I don't really use wallpapers often, but why not...

I would like to be able to disable DisplayFusion on virtual desktops. This would allow me to use applications in full size on virtual desktops. Not all programs support full screen mode when inside a DF space.

Any workaround for above?

It would be better if it would be possible to define which virtual desktops should have DF disabled.

Otherwise loving DF so far! :)

Hi

Also from my side a vote that DF pushes (a bit more?) its efforts to develop vitual desktop (VD) features.

My wishes:
- Automatic starting and positioning of applications on the VDs
- Different monitor profils on the VDs
- Different wallpapers on the VDs

Thanks for listening

Hey Friends!

My fix assumses:

1. 4K or close Display
2. Want to split up 4 ways
3. Desire to use Windows 10 Virtual Desktops

This was my case, maybe not yours. I have figured this out and solved the problem for now. I'm here to tell you, that while DF is amazing, you will need to exit it for this to work.

Here it is Simply put, Windows 10 will snap to the corner. I'm a tech, didnt know this until today. Really, just snap 4 windows to 4 corners and I was surprised enough to head on over here and let you guys know. Maybe I'm the last one to figure this out.

Anyways, I miss so many features. I want my start bar setup mostly. So please help us use DF with Virtual Desktops.

still no solution in sight as Keith wrote to me on June 24:
"We do actually have a lead on this, but it was too big of a change to include in 9.7. We're hoping to try it out for the next version, so if we are able to make it work reliably, we will definitely let you know!"

I am still using Dexpot for my virtual desktops which works fine but I would like to use the Windows 10 built-in feature - only if it was for getting rid of one extra program which I´m not sure of how long it will work.

yes, please support Virtual desktop...
Windows position profile should include the virtual destop and open in the right virtual desktop.
It would be so nice as well to have an option in the windows profile, to open the apps automatically. Lets say that I start my computer, hit the profile's hotkey and... all my apps open in the correct virtuel desktop at the preconfigured place ! that would be wonderfull;
It would be even more wonderfull if each virtual desktop could support different monitor profile !
