Greetings, I am having issues using videos as wallpapers, I have tested mp4 mkv and wmv, so far I have had no luck displaying any video. The problem generates a black screen with no movement, I am using windows 10 with all updates installed, and graphics drivers fully updated. If you require a full computer spec log, I will provide one.

It sounds like you just need to install a codec pack. This one should do the trick!
http://cccp-project.net/

Please let me know if you still run into any trouble at all.

Thanks!

Having trouble also. Using Windows 10 pro, codecs and active x up to date and working, computer restarted and tried all different types of files (.gif .mpg .mp4 .avi .vob .mts etc) tried all three background modes, tried different sizing entries, no preview even shows up and when applied screen remains blank. Running three monitors (and, yes, I've tried running on all three monitors. tried it with slideshow enabled/disabled, tried it with "don't stretch smaller images checked and unchecked. Any ideas?

I installed a codec pack (cccp) and still it doesn't work. When I try to set a video I get a black screen and my main monitor goes grey. I have to uninstall displayfusion and reinstall otherwise this "grey screen" show up when displayfusion loads and tried to apply settings. Any advice?

EDIT
It appears that the feature works if loading videos from the same harddrive that displayfusion is installed on, it would be nice if it could play videos from the second or third drive, just wanted to let you guys know how to address this bug.

EDIT2
Nevermind, it is still borked :(

EDIT3
Things that work!
>display different images | single videos selected
>display different images | slideshow with ignore timer enabled

Things that don't work!
>display same image on both monitors | any video configuration

EDIT4
Nothing really seems to work when I try to enable video, the primary monitor goes crazy flickering and colours. I guess ill have to wait till next patch to use this feature. For some reason the video feature does work *sometimes* on the secondary monitor but can still bug out quite often.

Same here, work before Anniversary win10 update, and now doesn't work...

I've reinstall all my PC (formatting) with newer ISO of win10, install codec but nothing. . .

I think it's a problem with current version. . .

For anyone still having issues getting the Video wallpaper to work in Windows 10, could you attach a backup of your settings? (Settings > Options > Export)

Thanks!

Just to chime in I'm having these issues as well. AVI works at full speed, GIF works but is super slow, and so far nothing else has worked, not WMV, MP4, MPEG, WEBM etc. I just get massive CPU usage and a very sluggish program when trying any of those. I have been using CCCP for years now, and have had no issues with any other player, everything else can run all video types I've come across online properly.

The other formats are a bit meh for me, but getting WEBM to work would be a godsend.

EDIT: FWIW running the CCCP function "Repair CCCP" which essentially sets it back to default and is very nearly the same thing as reinstalling it didn't help with the issue.

EDIT2: Just did some StaxRip experiments, it's not just the encoding that plays into it, the container affects things do. I re-encoded the same file twice with the same XviD codec settings, once as a plain AVI file, once as an MKV container. The AVI file worked, the MKV container didn't. And as mentioned earlier I have no problems running MKVs elsewhere.

EDIT3: Same for MP4 container, the same exact XviD settings in StaxRip produce an AVI that works, and an MP4 file that doesn't.

@Keith: Windows 10 Pro. FWIW I already have "Play animations in Windows" turned on, still suffering from anything that's not AVI or WMV (those actually do work now) not functioning properly in DisplayFusion while working perfectly elsewhere.

@Jussi: Thanks! That still sounds like a codec issue to me. Couple of follow-up questions:
  • Are you running Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit?
  • If it's 64-bit Windows, do you have the 64-bit version of CCCP installed?
  • Do you use a default install of CCCP? If not, can you tell me what settings you change during installation?

@Keith: Thanks for specifying that CCCP 64bit might make a difference, I wouldn't have guessed that because it makes no difference anywhere else. I did indeed have the 32bit CCCP installed (IIRC the 64bit MPC HC had some issues in the past) and uninstalling that and replacing it with the 64bit version got it working. Wonder why that made a difference for DF though when no other program seems to mind.

Oh well, glad it's sorted. Now just gotta wait until you can get the randomisation working for videos. =)

Glad to hear that fixed it! It makes a difference for DisplayFusion because DisplayFusion is a 64-bit application. 32-bit applications need the 32-bit codecs, and 64-bit apps need the 64-bit codecs. I believe you should be able to install both versions of CCCP, so that all apps will work, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Makes sense then, though I was under the impression that some of my other apps were indeed 64-bit versions, but I guess not.

Also just noticed that not only do the transitions not work when using videos (which is known of course) but that the transitions don't get reactivated after switching back to normal image backgrounds either, I need to cycle the setting to get them to work again.

Hi Everyone,
I was having this issue and found that going to the windows setting app, ease of access, other options, play animations in windows. It was set to on. However when reading this thread, I changed it to off, then back to on and it seem to do a little refresh spasm and started working again.
Gotta love Microsoft...

THanks for the Beta update. The videos now play randomly. However when I come back to the computer after the screensaver has been on the videos no longer play. Just a blank screen. I am running windows 10 with the latest updates. The problem was there before the last big windows update.

No other issues so far.

Ive tried this and also going in to the video wallpaper settings and clicking use these settings and nothing happens.

To only way I can get it to work without restarting the program is to reset the settings and add the folders back.

I have the latest Beta update and running Windows 10

Ok, would you be able to send a debug log? Here are the steps:
  • On the Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal"
  • Restart DisplayFusion
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Send us the DisplayFusion.log and DebugInfo.html files (can be found by clicking the Open Log button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

I'm not getting video wallpapers to work either with an mp4. I remember trying one other file of a different format and that worked, but I'm away from my computer at the moment and don't remember what format it was. I'm trying to avoid installing cccp as I have lav/madvr set up on this machine and don't want anything interfering with that.

No particiluar video, just tried add a folder where all my photos and videos are (from different video cameras/phones), and a single video file from that folder. Also, I have this in Info tab:

Code

Filename: <wp-filename>

When source selected as "video" that tab become disabled (cannot edit), however it still displays "Filename:" on screen with black background. The actual filename only displayed if slideshow disabled and a single file selected.

A bit of experiments in SystemPropertiesPerformance window (type that command in start menu) the only option that seems to affect video wallpaper is "Animate controls and elements inside windows", the rest of them can be disabled if needed.

[EDIT]
So now I have a few questions/issues:
  • 1) when folder selected, how do we skip to next video? load next slideshow command doesn't seem to work.

  • 2) I'm using this script with one line modified to minimize window instead of focus (
    BFS.Window.Focus(windows[0]);
    replaced with
    BFS.Window.Minimize(windows[0]);
). When cursor is over desktop, executing that script hides all icons and stops video wallpaper - black screen. Restore icons can be done via ALT+TAB. However that does not seem to restore video wallpaper. I have to open wallpaper settings, disable video, than enable it again. Is there an easier way restore video wallpaper?

  • 3) Most settings in "Monitor Settings" section of wallpaper window are greyed out, but if "Show info" was enabled before "My Videos" source was selected, it will display some info on desktop even though user unable change anything in that tab. Most tags regarding the wallpaper file don't work, but
    <wp-filename>
    works only when slideshow disabled.

  • 4) after computer woke up from sleep, video freezes and the only way revive it, is to disable video wallpaper and enable it again.

  • The "load next" command will only work if "Ignore walllpaper change timer" is disabled in the Video Wallpaper settings window.
  • I've updated that script to exclude the desktop window class, if you re-download it, that should hopefully fix this issue.
  • I can't seem to reproduce this issue here, when using single or folder for My Videos, the Image Info is always hidden. Could you send me a screenshot of what you're seeing?
  • I can't seem to reproduce this sleep issue either. Does the whole computer sleep, or just the monitors?

The problem isn't the script, the problem is what happens to video wallpaper when desktop gets minimized/crashes...

I just noticed, the info shows briefly and then disappears when video wallpaper first activated, but after hitting apply button again, it displays permanently. Also note, after playing single video file and then enabling slideshow, the info still shows filename of previous single file.

whole computer. Try a long video. After computer wakes up video plays very choppy for a few seconds, even though CPU/hard drive is not overloaded, than it plays ok for a while and finally freezes. Once that happend, hitting apply button in DF wallpaper window does nothing.

Ah ok, I see now. I thought that it was supposed to stretch the videos but I was mistaken. When I test with your resolution, I can see the image info now as well, because the video isn't filling the desktop.

I'm having the same issues but I haven't been able to figure out this one yet. I've used an AVI (maybe uncompressed, don't remember), and the playback works, but if I try with an MP4 it just refuses to. The MP4s I've tried have been AVC1 H.264, and HEVC.

Status:
  • Display Fusion 9.7
  • Windows 10 x64 (20H2, 19042.685)
  • ✓ Show animations in Windows
  • ✓ Show desktop background image
  • ✓ Videos play in WMP

The issue was always present, even in previous builds. Even though they work correctly in WMP I've tried the LAV codecs with no success, both x86 and x64, to no use. Anything else I can try?

Also there's a pretty annoying glitch involving video wallpaper switches, where video repetitions start getting delayed with a blank screen in between, more and more, and that affects even static wallpapers. But I'll open a separate thread/file a bug report for this later.

Sure thing. I scaled it down to keep the size small, and also attached a screen of WMP playing it back.

Also, as for the bug I mentioned, I guess it solved itself, as it's no longer possible to re-activate "Use the same image on each monitor" if one of the monitors has a video instead. That used to cause massive headaches.

Ok, I'm at my wit's end, the AVI that *definitively* was working in 9.7, and that I saved as a separate wallpaper profile, doesn't really work anymore. :-[

Edit: I'm still not 100% sure of what the problem was, but it indeed seemed to be a problem with my machine. I've installed just the video part from the LAV Filters 0.7.4.1-x64 zip package, reset all the policies on my PC to factory settings, reboot, reimported the policies settings, and now everything works fine. Sorry for the confusion, this had me stunned for a while, and thanks for the help
