I've noticed that after upgrading to the Creators update, my window positions are no longer being saved/restored properly. I deleted the triggers and added them again and the same thing happens. Ideas?

Anybody? This is getting really annoying. Even minimized windows before display sleep all end up on display 1. Is nobody else now having this issue?

Mine are still working after the Creators Update. If you assign a key combination to the "Restore Window Positions" function on the Settings > Functions tab, and manually run it when you return from sleep mode, does it restore the positions?

I'll give that a try and let you know.

I setup a key combo for Restore Window Positions From Last save and that's a no go. First, it looks like it's restoring the window (on the wrong screen) and then it quickly minimizes again. Then if I click on that app it opens in the wrong window again. It seems like DF is confused or something. I don't know what the heck is going on. Do I maybe need to uninstall DF and reinstall?

I've attached debug info and also the log, which I had changed to "minimal". Hopefully they show something.

The restore and re-minimize is expected. DisplayFusion can't change the size/position of a minimized window, so it restores it, fixes its size/position, and then minimizes it again.

What's definitely not expected is the fact that it's still in the wrong position when you manually restore it from the taskbar. Which application is having this issue? I'd like to test it out here.

Thanks!

FYI - I ended up having to do a reset over the weekend to solve a network problem (local name resolution up and stopped working after CU) and now DF is behaving normally and remembers the locations of apps after the triggers run. Totally sucks that the update messed things up, but at least are back to normal again.

Ughhh. I stand corrected. After a longer time away from the PC the windows still aren't going back to their proper location. So same problem still occuring.

Ok, can you try this, so we can figure out if the issue is with the Save/Restore functions, or with the Triggers?
  • Disable the Triggers and Apply the settings
  • Assign key combinations to the Save/Restore functions and apply the Settings
  • Next time you leave the computer, manually run the Save function
  • When you return, manually run the Restore function
  • Did it restore all of the windows correctly?

Thanks Keith. Yes, this worked perfectly. So why are the triggers not working?

Good question! Could you attach screenshots of the Trigger rules you have setup?

I may have figured out why it wasn't working. I looked at my settings compared to your FAQ and it looks like I missed the "wait 5000ms" part. I put that in and I'll see if that does the trick. Hope so!

Seems to be working properly now. Sorry about that. Totally missed that part of the setup after doing a reset!

So much for being all good. It worked a couple of times and now it isn't working again. Not entirely sure why at this point.

Does a longer delay help at all?

Not sure. I can try that. Whatever is happening doesn't happen all the time. It worked about as much as it didn't work today.

That would be a negative. Works a few times and then stops. Weird.

Weird indeed! Is there any difference in the amount of time your machine is asleep between when it works and doesn't work? (i.e. does it work if the computer is asleep for a short period, but not if it's asleep longer?)

I would say that sounds accurate. If I come back after the displays are asleep only minutes afterwards it seems ok. Longer or if I leave long enough for the entire system to sleep, not so much.

If you leave the Save Trigger enabled so the save is still automatic, but disable the Restore trigger, and manually run the Restore function, do you still run into any issues?

That would be a negative. It looks like it's actually trying to restore everything to just one monitor when I trigger it.

Ok, interesting! So maybe the Save trigger is saving it at the wrong time. Could you try disabling the Save trigger, and enabling the Restore trigger. Then manually save before you leave the computer, and see if it automatically restores when you return?

So far this has been working. Not sure why the trigger wouldn't always be working though.

Screen saver is set for 5 minutes, display sleep 10 minutes, and the time for the trigger is 540 seconds. Should I try shortening that up some??

If it's working, you can try shortening it up if needed and see if it keeps working.

I meant to say manually saving the positions is working. Trigger still probably not. Hence maybe changing the timing might help.

I tried shortening the idle time and it still doesn't working with the trigger. :(

This is going to need more testing, we'll try to replicate the issue here and see if we can help you out more. Stay tuned for more. :)

@Anthony: Does your desktop automatically lock when the screen saver starts? If so, could you try changing the Save trigger to use the "Desktop Locked" event instead of the Idle Timer?

It does. I'll try this and report back.

I made this switch last week and so far every time it's triggered it's saving the window positions properly. Hopefully this will continue to hold!

Thanks for all the assistance.
