Hi,

Recently I've had a problem when trying to search with the DisplayFusion task bar's start menu. It does one of three things; it works, and I can search normally, it doesn't search and just makes the start menu collapse as soon as I start to type , or it searches but in a full screen.
Is there any way to get consistency for searching with the start menu.

Thanks.

That's really strange! Could you attach a copy of your troubleshooting info?
  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the "Copy to Clipboard" button
  • Paste the text into a text file (please don't paste the text directly into your reply, the formatting gets garbled and makes it difficult to parse)
  • Reply with the file attached

I wasn't able to reproduce this issue here using the same monitor setup as yours. Could you attach a copy of your settings? (Settings > Options > Export)

Thanks! Still no luck reproducing this behaviour over here with your monitor layout and settings. Just as a shot in the dark, if you disable the "Aero Colour Mode" option on the DisplayFusion Settings > Options tab, does that make any difference?

From what I can tell, it just open the search full screen all the time now, and the search goes behind the task bar. Image of this here: https://i.imgur.com/ol01sXy.png

Oh, I just noticed that this only happens on my primary monitor. When the task bar is on my secondary it seems to work fine

Did this start happening with 9.0, or 9.1 Beta 1?

I had Display Fusion before on a different account, and this problem was present before 9.0

Ok, thanks! We've just posted 9.1 final. Could you try updating and let me know if you still run into this issue?

I would just like to report that my start menu is behaving in the exact same way. And I can add that I breaks the windows search function when using the windows key but not when clicking on the icon. It also is really slow on showing the start menu.

I have done a full reinstall of DF and importing my settings and it did look fine after that, but this morning it was back.

Moving around the "true" taskbar solves the issue for some time but it always starts misbehaving short thereafter again.
Disabling the Multi-Monitor Taskbars does not solve the issue either. If I do that, the startmenu starts showing on my 3rd monitor where the DF Taskbar used to be if I don't move my "true" taskbar to the 3rd monitor.

Exiting DF, moving the "true" taskbar to the 3rd monitor and back fixes the issue permanently.

This issue was not been present before the recent upgrade on June 27. I have yet to try downgrading, I wanted to report it before I did that.

Hi,

My issue is still there, but the DF star menu just disappears when I type into. Actually, it is still there; just invisible. If I type and press enter it still searches for what I typed.

I've just being using the default windows start menu search function, since i was never able to find a fix.

This is till happening even in the current version

If you guys move the Windows taskbar to another monitor while DF is still running, does that make any difference? The DF taskbar will swap to the opposite monitor, I'm just wondering if it makes a difference which monitor has the Windows taskbar when DF is running.

Hi,

When I moved it across out of the main monitor onto my secondary, and open search. Typing any letter would then open the search on the Windows task bar on the other monitor

This is an unfortunate issue with the way Windows 10 handles the search box right now. We're looking at fixing it for a future version though, it's quite annoying. :)

Is that for the invisible search box, or how the search box changes over monitors, or both?

I personally prefer the display fusion taskbar due to it showing over full screen applications when alt-tabbed to another monitor. The windows default task bar is hidden unless the application you're alt-tabbed into is on the same monitor as it.

I recently got the issue as well. When trying to search with the DisplayFusion taskbar or open made folders in the start menu with the DisplayFusion taskbar, the response is slow and is opening on a different monitor (running 3 monitors)

Settingsfile attached.

I'm running into the same issue. Below, I wrote what was happening at this point in time. Then I took a video, and some of the details changed, so view video for the differences.

I have 3 monitors. 1 x 4k monitor with a 4 way split, 1 x 1080p monitors, and 1 x 1080p screen on the laptop. 4k monitor is labeled monitor 3, top left is 3.1, bottom left is 3.2, top right is 3.3, and bottom right is 3.4. 1080p monitor is monitor 2. Laptop screen is monitor 1. Primary monitor is the 4k monitor, so the windows start menu shows up on 3.2. DF taskbar on 3.1 and 3.3 are on top of screen, auto-hide. All other screens have normal DF taskbar on bottom.

Click on Windows start menu (3.2). Start menu always flashes. Sometimes stays open, sometimes "closes" (really it's still open, but invisible). If start menu is open and I start typing to do a search, start menu disappears, but it's still working invisibly. Same behavior if I press start button on keyboard with 3.2 active.

Top of 4k monitor, 3.1 and 3.3. Pressing start on keyboard, start menu flashes on 3.2 (as expected), moves to 3.1/3.3. If I start typing, the search window actually works and is visible, but moves back to 3.2. If I click on the start menu instead of using keyboard, get the same flash on 3.2, moves to 3.1/3.3. However, when I start doing a search, start menu disappears but is still working.

Bottom right of 4k monitor, 3.4. Click on start menu, start menu flashes on 3.2, and then closes. It's actually closed. I can see that the start button on 3.2 is actively selected, and a hover over pop saying "start", like my mouse is hovering over the button on 3.2, but is obviously not. Pressing start button on keyboard with 3.4 active, start menu flashes on 3.2, moves to 3.4, start typing, start menu disappears but the search is still working.

Screens 1 and 2 operate the same. Click on start menu, flash on 3.2, moves to 1/2, start typing, and start menu actually stays on 1/2. Press start button on keyboard, flash on 3.2, moves to 1/2, start typing, start menu stays open, but moves back to 3.2.

I don’t care about the flash on 3.2. However, I really want the start menu to quit disappearing. Ideally, I want all monitors and splits to operate just like monitors 1 and 2 do when I click on the start menu, but want it to work for keyboard button too.

I have attached my settings export. I also took a video so you can see what is happening. Unfortuntaly, after typing everything above, some of the start menu weirdness was actually different. On each screen I pressed the start button, then typed "blue", and pressed enter to open Bluebeam. So even if the start menu disappears, you know what I was doing. Hopefully, this will help you pin down the problem.

@tpolz: Could you attach a debug log as well?

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Thanks!

For anyone finding this years later as I encountered this issue and found this post while searching for a solution:

I encountered this issue and noticed that when I clicked the windows key to bring up the menu it was brought up on a different monitor than the one with the task bar. I fixed this by disabling Multi-monitor taskbar in the display fusion taskbar settings, unlocking the task bar, moving the taskbar to the area where the windows key was bringing up the menu, pressing the windows key to see that the expected behavior was there, then moving the taskbar back to its original location and it worked.
