After performing the latest DisplayFusion update, my main monitor flickers. It's very intermittent, and since it's my laptop screen that I only really use for email notifications, it's hard to say what might be triggering the behavior. I'm usually working on the secondary monitor, and I'll see the flickering out of the corner of my eye. However, I have been reading emails when it has happened, but even then, I wasn't doing anything that might cause it to happen.

Other than the normal Windows 7 updates, I haven't installed anything else other than the last DisplayFusion update.

It's not a show-stopper, but it's very distracting. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! I don't see anything out of the ordinary there. Is it the whole monitor that flickers, or just the taskbar?

My main display is the laptop screen, and the whole screen flickers. I'm not sure if it's in response to some system event, but it's intermittent. When it happens, I've tried to track what is happening, but there doesn't seem to be a pattern.

At first I thought that it might be when I receive an email (we use Gmail at work), but it doesn't happen every time.

I'm starting to wonder if it might be related to windows that I have configured to move from Monitor 1 to Monitor 2. Again, it's not consistently happening, so it's really hard to say.

Ok, could you send me a full debug log? Here are the steps:
  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • The next time it flickers, note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab and click "Export Info to File"
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

It just happened...according to my clock, it was shortly before 1:42:40pm. That's Central Time, because my office is in Texas. I'm on Eastern Time, so it will either show up as 1:42 or 2:42 in the logs. Sorry for the confusion...they lock down our settings.

Thanks! There's nothing out of the ordinary in the debug log either, very strange! How often does it occur? Does it happen often enough that you could try exiting DisplayFusion and confirm that it no longer flickers?

I can try that. I've already rebooted, so I can confirm that doesn't help. It just started after the last update to DisplayFusion, but that might just be a coincidence. I have a few things to finish here at work, but when I can, I'll shut down the app and monitor it for a while.

Thanks for all of your help!

No worries, sounds good. No rush at all, just keep me posted on what you find out.

Thanks!

I restarted both DisplayFusion and the computer, and neither has fixed the problem. It's not happening as frequently, but it is still happening. I'm considering moving the only thing that I have open on the main monitor, which is Gmail, to the secondary monitor, and then moving something lightweight, like a text editor, to the main monitor, just so that I can see if the flickering continues.

Scratch that idea...I just moved Gmail to my secondary monitor and opened Notepad on the main screen, and after about 5 minutes, it flickered. Not sure what to do at this point...guess I'm just going to have to deal with the nuisance.

Probably is meaningless, but I run Gmail and the Google Calendar in the Chrome browser.

Thanks for the update! I noticed that you said you restarted DisplayFusion. Did you also try just exiting DisplayFusion, and seeing if it still happens when DisplayFusion is not running?

Interesting...it is still doing it, even with DisplayFusion not running. Not sure why it's only occurring on my laptop (primary) display, but definitely rules out DisplayFusion.

Thanks again!

No worries, thanks for trying that out! I'm not sure what would be causing that, but there are a couple of other troubleshooting steps you could try:
  • Disable all startup applications and reboot, see if it still flickers with nothing running.
  • Try updating the video card drivers.
  • If the above fails, it could be an issue with the connection between the laptop mainboard and the display itself.

Good luck!

Thanks again for all of your help! Looks like I have a few things to look at, but if all else fails, I'll turn it over to our Tech Support people and see if it's something they've ever ran into.

Just to follow up...

I was finally able to figure out what was happening (but not really why). I was typing a rather lengthy email, so I was focusing on my laptop screen, and the flicker happened multiple times. I noticed that the laptop's battery indicator flashed red as the flicker occurred. So my guess is that it is temporarily switching over to battery power for some reason, and that is causing the monitor to flicker.

Thanks again for all of your help in trying to get to the root of the problem!
