I just recently upgraded from a 3 monitor setup involving 1 2560x1440 monitor and 2 1680x1050 ones, plus a 1080p tv by replacing the 2 1680x1050 monitors with additional 1440p monitors. During that install, I had to troubleshoot my graphics card for some reason only outputting an analog signal, and found that aero was broken.

The video card had to be RMA'd so I figured I'd wait to troubleshoot until after I installed the new card, which I have done now and found that aero is still broken. I force-enabled aero by adding the UseMachineCheck, Animations, and Blur dwords in the DWM key in the registry, which re-enabled aero succesfully, but when I went back into displayfusion and re-applid my wallpaper image settings, Aero was immediately broken again.

Strange! Do you have the Aero Colour setting enabled on the DisplayFusion Settings > Options tab?

Thanks!

Keith,

As I am away from home, I cannot verify right this moment, however, my recollection is that any set of options that referenced Aero inside of Displayfusion were greyed out.

I will verify the specific option that you inquired about this evening and report back more conclusively.

Thanks

Keith,

As I thought, the entire Aero Color Settings area is greyed out under the options tab in displayfusion settings.

Thanks,
Hunter

Ok, makes sense, as it can't set the Aero colours when DWM is disabled. After re-enabling Aero, could you try doing a wallpaper change again, and have the Windows Task Manager open while it's changing, to see if the CPU or memory usage for any of the DisplayFusion processes climb really high?

I have re-force-enabled aero in the registry, and confirmed that the aero related settings in displayfusion settings are no longer greyed out.

Before applying the wallpaper, Displayfusion.exe and displayfusionsettings.exe are occupying between 80 and 90 megs of ram and cpu load is very low. Upon applying the wallpaper settings, displayfusion.exe jumped up to about 98 megs of ram usage and there was a small spike in cpu load, but I wouldn't describe the occurrence as "climbing really high."

Ok, strange! Did this only start happening after you upgraded the monitors? I've setup a test system here with the same setup as yours (3x 2560x1440 + 1x 1920x1080), and I can't reproduce the issue.

Would you be able to send over a debug log after fixing Aero, and then applying the wallpaper again?
  • On the Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "Logging: Important Only"
  • Restart DisplayFusion
  • Reproduce the issue, note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Send us the DisplayFusion.log and DebugInfo.html files (can be found by clicking the Open Log button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

I have actually for some reason not been able to re-force aero to enable even using the same techniques that I have been using up until this point in the troubleshooting. I will continue to pursue the exact long that you're looking for, but in case it's any help to you, I've attached copies of the logs that would have been running during my attempts to do so, date and time 7-16-14 approximately 10:00 pm to 10:40pm.

Ok, I found this tool that seemingly can re-enable Aero: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/aero_effects_not_working

Also, something to check, is the Properties > Compatibility tab for both DisplayFusion.exe and DisplayFusionSettings.exe, as well as their shortcuts on the Start menu, to see if any of the boxes (specifically "Disable Desktop Composition") are enabled. If so, try disabling them to see if that helps :)

The microsoft fixit tool that you linked returns a result saying that my graphics card is not capable of windows aero. This can't be the case, of course, as the problem arose mid-troubleshooting after using my GTX660ti for 2 years running windows aero, and I've now upgraded to a GTX680.

Disable desktop composition is not checked for any of the executables that you mentioned, nor is anything else checked that bears any relevance.

Ok, that's really weird! Almost seems like an issue with the video card drivers. Have you tried the Aero Troubleshooter?

I have in fact tried the aero troubleshooter. It always returns that it cannot locate the problem.

I was able to reenable aero and then reapply the wallpaper and have have the aero disabled. I have attached the logs that should include this event. It happened 7-19-14 right around 1:48 am.

Ok, from the debug log, it looks like DisplayFusion is trying to set the Aero Colour based on the wallpaper. When you're able to re-enable Aero again, can you send me a screenshot of the Settings > Options tab, and also export your DisplayFusion Settings and attach them so I can have a quick look?

Thanks!

Has this issue been resolved? I see no more replies after comment #14. I am having near identical issues and have even tried the tool to enable Aero again which has given me the same "video card not supported" error.

Never heard back from Hunter after my last post, so I'm not sure if he got it sorted out or not.

@Jacob: If you exit DisplayFusion, are you able to re-enable Aero successfully?

DisplayFusion broke my Win7 aero, tried everything to get it back on, not even uninstalling the software works.
Any ideas?

Another thing I noticed is my DPI settings in windows no longer work no matter what I set them to. This program obliterated my windows some how.

There shouldn't be anything in DisplayFusion that can break Aero Glass (DWM), and if you still can't enable it after uninstalling DisplayFusion, there must be something else going on there. Between that and the DPI scaling issues (which DisplayFusion also can't affect), it sounds like there might be some issues with your video card drivers. Have you tried updating them, or uninstalling/re-installing them?

I'm having a similar issue. it seems after I configured my 3 monitor set up (one 4k monitor/two 1080p monitors) that my aero seemed to have messed up and cannot fix itself. My aero settings in displayfusion are also greyed out.

Hello. No I am not able to do so. I think a program I installed/uninstalled messed something up with aero.

After uninstalling displayfusion I still cant seem to fix aero. I've tried all the methods I could find online. My current option right now is reformat :(

I have the same issue. Windows 7N Pro x64. Aero options are 100% gone from the Visual Effects tab of Performance Options window and the Window Color option in the Personalization window opens the old-school Windows 98-like 'Window Color and Appearance" dialog.

I tried uninstalling DisplayFusion.
I tried new display drivers.
I tried every registry hack I could find.
I tried sfc scan.
I tried more googling and ended up here, hurray.

Also, I don't have system restore enabled since I didn't expect a program that allowed something as simple as multiple desktop backgrounds across multiple monitors to annihilate my copy of Windows.

DisplayFusion can't break Windows Aero like that, especially if it's been completely uninstalled. Is your monitor's colour depth set to 16 bit in the Windows screen resolution control panel?
