Here is another new build, for those brave enough to try it. :) Just kidding, it should be getting very stable now. I've added a new feature called "Window previews". It works like the Vista window thumbnails on the taskbar. You can find the new version here:
http://www.binaryfortress.com/Temp/DisplayFusion_TEST9.zip

Extract this over-top of your existing DisplayFusion installation, as you'll need the new .EXE and .LANG files.

Thanks, and happy testing!

Window preview is not adapted to taskbar on the left/right of the screen.
The first couple of previews are overflowing at the top of the screen.
Solution: Render the preview beside the buttons or at the bottom of the button if there is not enough space on top of the button.

Could you post a capture? I've loaded up the DF bar and the previews stay nice an tidy...

I'll be testing it today. I have a feeling my previous problems stemmed from Google Talk. Beyond not flashing when a chat comes in (which is rough), it feels like it's causing the locks. I'll let you know how the new one goes.

The previews are not showing on my primary monitor. Is this the expected result?

Also the previews do not appear to be compatible with http://www.pidgin.im/.
I am attaching a screenshot of what I am seeing.

The taskbar icon dragging is not enabled on my primary monitor. It is working on my secondary monitor however.

@dru: I will be supporting vertical taskbars in the next beta.

@zanthian: Previews aren't supported on the Windows taskbar. Vista has this feature built-in, but XP doesn't. Some applications don't play nicely with this feature, and there isn't much I can do about it. :(

@zanthian: Taskbar item dragging is only supported on the DisplayFusion taskbars.

Just a note about the button title text popping up. It often overlays the actual button (see first attachment). The regular Windows taskbar keeps the text above the button (second attachment). When the new (and cool) thumb-views are added, it gets quite busy...

Personally, I'd prefer the option to turn off the popup text descriptions.. never had a use for them...

Great implementation of drag and drop reordering!
I have a little software called Taskix to do roughly the same thing on the Windows taskbar.
However, I set my DF taskbar to be a clone of the Windows one and when I reorder the Windows buttons, The DF taskbar isn't updated. Do I have to say that I would love to have this feature...

@benway: The tooltip problem has already been fixed in the next beta. I hated the overlap as well. :) I probably won't include an interface option to disable the tooltips, but I may provide a hidden registry setting.

@dru: The problem is, I can't reliably detect the current order of the Windows taskbar. Most of the time DisplayFusion will get the taskbar items in the same order as the Windows taskbar, but on Windows 7 this isn't the case.

I think for consistency, if possible, the advanced features available for the DF taskbar should be replicated to the windows taskbar. It's not such a bother for me--I've been using third part apps to get windows previews on XP, and the ability to reorder taskbar items before DF. But I could see plenty of people asking why DF doesn't offer those features on the windows taskbar.

I think this is pretty typical with GTK software. I'm not sure even Vista can display previews for them.

Jon,

Yesterday was the first time I have made it through a day without the application crashing. I am hopeful that the changes you made have solved my issue. I will continue to monitor it.

At this point, eyes probably need to be focused on W7 anyway. I wouldn't expecttoomuch effort be put towards all the extra 'niceties' for XP when w7 is a much tougher nut to crack...

It may be just me, just CTRL WIN E maximizes and switches screens instead of being proportional - same functionality as CRTL WIN D

The issue with the DF taskbar freezing has returned in this build.

A new beta has been released:
http://www.binaryfortress.com/Forum/index.php?topic=865.0

@kruzayn: Ctrl + Win + E is supposed to maximize the window, and Ctrl + Win + D seems to size proportional correctly for me.

@microUgly,@benway: Windows Vista and Windows 7 already have the taskbar window previews built-in to the Windows Taskbar. It will take a supreme amount of work to add it to the Windows XP taskbar, so I'll probably just leave that alone. It's a bit inconsistent, but the newer versions of Windows have this feature. :)
